Smoke-free campus plan for UBCO

Nov 10, 2020 | Substance Use

A plan for establishing a smoke-free campus was developed by Dr. Joan Bottorff and Carleigh Benoit, at the request of the UBCO Standing Committee on Smoking and Cannabis.  With significant changes at UBCO to protect the health and safety of students, staff and faculty related to the pandemic, the plan provided an additional opportunity to support a healthy and safe environment for everyone. The proposed transition to a smoke-free campus was also based on evidence related to increased risks associated with COVID-19 among individuals who smoke. The plan was presented to the UBCO Principal’s Executive Committee on November 10, 2020. Their decision was to defer further consideration of a smoke-free policy for UBCO for 4-5 years because it was not considered a priority initiative at this time, and that smoking cessation and education approaches continue to be offered.
